Should you run a fan and the aircon at the same time, or is that just burning electricity twice? Short answer: a fan plus aircon, used correctly, cools you better and cuts your bill. The trick is knowing why it works and setting both appliances accordingly. This guide covers the physics in plain English, the right settings for Singapore, and the mistakes that waste the savings.
At Lion City Aircon we have serviced over 22,000 units since 2016, and this is one of the most common questions customers ask our technicians.
Why a Fan Makes Your Aircon’s Job Easier
A fan does not lower the room temperature at all. What it does is move air across your skin, which speeds up evaporation and heat transfer from your body. Moving air makes you feel 2 to 3 degrees cooler than the thermometer says, an effect called wind chill.
That means with a fan running, a room set at 26 degrees feels like 23 to 24. You get the comfort of a low set point while the aircon only works to a higher one. Since every degree higher on the thermostat saves roughly 5 to 10 percent of cooling energy, raising the set point from 23 to 26 with a fan covering the difference is a real saving, while a fan costs only a few cents a day to run.
The Right Way to Pair Them in Singapore
- Set the aircon to 25 or 26 degrees, not 20. Let the fan close the comfort gap. See our aircon modes guide for what the other settings do.
- Ceiling fan: low to medium speed, spinning anticlockwise (looking up at it) so it pushes air downward onto you.
- Standing fan: aim it at the people, not at the aircon or the walls. Wind chill only works on skin.
- Keep doors and windows closed, same as always with aircon. The fan circulates the cooled air, it does not need fresh air to work. Open windows just let the cooling escape, as we cover in why open windows waste energy.
- Use the fan to spread cooling into dead corners. A single wall-mounted fan coil cools unevenly. A fan evens out the warm spots instead of you cranking the set point down.
Ceiling Fan vs Standing Fan
Ceiling fans circulate the whole room and pair best with aircon for bedrooms and living rooms. Standing fans are directional, which is fine when everyone is on the sofa or in bed, and they cost nothing to relocate. If you are renovating, a ceiling fan in the living room and main bedroom is the better long-term pairing. If not, a $50 standing fan captures most of the benefit.
When the Fan Combo Does Not Help
Honesty section. A fan will not fix these:
- An undersized or struggling aircon. If the unit cannot get the room below 28 at full effort, the problem is capacity, dirt or refrigerant, not air movement. Start with our aircon not cooling guide.
- Empty rooms. Wind chill works on people. Running fans in unoccupied rooms is pure waste.
- Extreme humidity moments. On very sticky days, moving humid air around helps less. Dry mode plus a fan often beats cool mode alone, see how dry mode works.
What This Does to Your Bill
A typical fan draws 30 to 70 watts. A typical split aircon draws 700 to 2,500 watts when the compressor is working. Raising your set point from 23 to 26 degrees with a fan covering the comfort difference trims roughly 15 to 30 percent off cooling energy in practice, depending on your unit and habits. For the full numbers, see how much energy your aircon uses.
One more thing: none of this works if the aircon itself is dirty. A clogged filter or coil forces the unit to run longer regardless of your clever settings. Regular servicing (from $45 a unit, excluding GST) protects the savings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does running a fan with the aircon use more electricity?
The fan adds a few cents a day. If it lets you raise the aircon set point by even 2 degrees, the net effect is a meaningful saving, not a cost.
Which direction should the ceiling fan spin with aircon?
Anticlockwise when viewed from below, so air blows down on you. That is the standard setting in Singapore year round.
Should the fan point at the aircon to spread cold air?
No. Point it at the people. The cooling feeling comes from air moving across skin. Aiming at the aircon or a wall wastes most of the effect.
Can a fan replace the aircon at night?
On cooler nights, often yes, and it costs a fraction to run. Many customers cool the bedroom down first, then switch to fan only or use the aircon timer. Comfort is personal, so experiment.
Is it bad for the aircon to run with a fan?
Not at all. If anything the aircon works less hard because it is targeting a higher temperature.
Keep the Savings Real
Fan plus aircon at 26 degrees is the cheapest comfort upgrade in Singapore. If your aircon still struggles or your bill stays high after these changes, something else is wrong and it is worth a proper look.
