The Truth Most Won't Tell You

Your aircon is a closed loop. Refrigerant doesn't run out.

An aircon system doesn't burn refrigerant the way a car burns petrol. It's a sealed loop — gas circulates, cools your room, and cycles back. If your gas is low, you have a leak. It might be a tiny one that takes two years to matter, or a bigger one that'll need topping up every few months.

Why most companies hide this
It's easier to bill for a $150 top-up every year than to spend $190 finding the actual leak. We tell you both options upfront and let you decide.

That's why every gas top-up job at Lion City Aircon starts with a $60 troubleshooting visit. We confirm it's actually a gas issue (not a dirty coil or faulty thermostat), figure out roughly how big the leak is, then walk you through your two options — top up and see, or pressure test and find the leak.

Signs Your Aircon Might Need Gas

How do you know if it's actually low gas?

These are the most common signs of refrigerant loss — but they can also be caused by other issues, which is why we troubleshoot first instead of guessing.

🥶

Aircon runs but doesn't cool

Compressor is on, fan is blowing, but the air feels lukewarm. Classic gas pressure issue — but not always.

🧊

Ice on the copper pipes

Frost or ice forming on the pipes outside the unit is a strong indicator of low refrigerant pressure.

⏱️

Takes forever to cool

Used to cool the room in 10 minutes, now takes an hour. Unit is struggling because there's not enough gas to do the job.

🔄

Compressor short-cycles

Outdoor unit clicks on and off rapidly instead of running steadily. Often caused by low refrigerant tripping safety sensors.

💧

Water dripping (sometimes)

Severe ice buildup inside the fan coil eventually melts and leaks water. Sign of a long-standing gas issue.

📈

Higher electricity bills

Low-gas units run continuously trying to reach the set temperature. You're paying more to cool less.

Don't assume it's gas — sometimes it's just a dirty coil. WhatsApp us describing the symptoms and we'll tell you what's most likely causing it.

Your Two Options

If gas is low, here's how we proceed

We always present both options honestly. Most older systems just need a top-up. Some need a real fix.

Option 1

Top up the gas

$80–$200 typicalR22 / R32 / R410A · System 1–5

We connect manifold gauges to your system, identify the gas type, weigh in the correct amount of refrigerant, and run the unit to confirm cooling has been restored.

  • 30–45 minutes per visit
  • Cooling restored same day
  • $60 troubleshooting fee waived
  • You'll know if you need to top up again next year
Best when: System is older (10+ years), small slow leak, or you want a quick fix at lower cost upfront.
Option 2

Pressure test & find the leak

From $190System 1 base · +$60 per additional unit

We dismantle the units, set up pressure gauges on every component, pump in H2 (hydrogen) to ~350 psi, then return 2–3 days later to check if any unit has dropped pressure. That tells us exactly where the leak is.

  • Two-visit process (3 days apart)
  • Pinpoints the exact leak location
  • Permanent fix instead of repeat top-ups
  • Quote for actual repair separate from test
Best when: You've been topping up gas every few months, or system is newer (under 5 years) and shouldn't be losing gas yet.

We diagnose first

Most "no cooling" complaints aren't actually gas. We check before charging you for refrigerant you don't need.

R22 still handled

Even though phased out globally, we still source R22 for older HDB and condo units. No need to replace the whole system.

Real pressure tests

Other companies do a one-shot test and call it done. We pressurise and return 2–3 days later — that's how you actually catch slow leaks.

The Lion City Process

How a gas top-up job actually works

No assumptions, no surprise bills. Here's exactly what happens from your first call to a cool aircon.

1

You WhatsApp or call us

Tell us what's happening — "aircon not cooling," "ice on the pipes," whatever you're seeing. We'll give you a rough sense of what it could be.

2

Schedule a troubleshooting visit ($60)

Most customers don't actually know what's wrong — they just know it's not cooling. We come down to find out for sure.

3

We diagnose on-site

Check the filter, fan coil, electrical, drainage and refrigerant pressure. Nine times out of ten the problem isn't where customers think it is.

4

We tell you what we found

If it's a dirty coil, we say so. If it's an electrical fault, we say so. If gas is low — we move to step 5. No hidden findings, no upsell scripts.

5

If gas is low — your two options

(a) Top up and see how long it lasts, or (b) Pressure test to find the leak. We explain both and let you decide. No pressure either way.

6

Top up (if you choose it)

Connect manifold gauges, identify your gas type (R22 / R32 / R410A), weigh in the correct amount, run the unit to verify cooling. $60 fee waived.

7

Or pressure test (if you choose it)

Dismantle the units, set up gauges on each item, pump in H2 to ~350 psi. We leave the system pressurised and head out.

8

Return 2–3 days later

Re-check every component. If anything dropped in pressure, that's the leak source. We then quote the actual repair separately from the test fee.

Transparent Pricing

What you'll pay, depending on what you need

Honest pricing for residential multi-split systems. VRV/VRF is quoted separately because the gas volumes are completely different.

Common Questions

Aircon gas top-up FAQ

Quick answers to what most Singapore homeowners ask before booking.

How much does an aircon gas top-up cost in Singapore?
An aircon gas top-up Singapore typically costs $80–$200 for residential multi-split systems (System 1–5), depending on gas type and amount needed. We start with a $60 troubleshooting visit to confirm the issue is actually low gas (and not something else like a dirty coil) — this fee is waived if you proceed with the top-up. VRV/VRF commercial systems are quoted separately as they often require full tanks of refrigerant.
Why don't you give a flat price for gas top-up?
Because every job is different. Gas top-up pricing depends on the type of refrigerant (R22, R32 or R410A) and how much your system needs. A small top-up on a single split costs much less than refilling a system that's lost most of its charge. Companies that quote one flat price either overcharge small jobs or under-quote and surprise you with extras. We assess on-site and quote you the actual amount before doing any work.
Why does my aircon need a gas top-up at all?
An aircon system is a closed loop — refrigerant doesn't get used up like petrol. If gas is low, it means there's a leak somewhere. That said, very small leaks in older systems are common and topping up may be cheaper than chasing a tiny leak. We give you both options honestly: top up and see how long it lasts, or do a pressure test to find the exact leak point.
What's a pressure test and when do I need one?
A pressure test is the proper way to find a refrigerant leak. We dismantle the units, hook up pressure gauges to each component, pump in H2 (hydrogen) to around 350 psi, and check for leaks. We then leave the system pressurised and return 2–3 days later — if any unit has dropped pressure, that's where the leak is. Pressure tests start from $190 for System 1, with +$60 per additional unit. You typically need a pressure test if you've been topping up gas every few months — that means the leak is significant enough to find and fix permanently.
Do you handle R22, R32 and R410A?
Yes — all three. Most newer systems (post-2018) use R32, slightly older systems use R410A, and very old units (typically 10+ years) still use R22. Even though R22 is being phased out globally, we still source it for older HDB and condo units that aren't ready for replacement yet.
How do I know if my aircon needs a gas top-up?
Common signs: aircon is running but not cooling, ice or frost forming on the copper pipes outside the unit, longer cooling time, or the outdoor compressor short-cycling on and off. But these can also be caused by a dirty coil, faulty thermostat or weak fan motor — that's why we always troubleshoot first instead of assuming it's gas.
How does the troubleshooting fee work?
We charge $60 for a troubleshooting visit because most customers don't actually know what's wrong with their aircon — they just know it's not cooling. We come down, run diagnostics, and tell you exactly what the issue is. If it turns out to be low gas and you proceed with the top-up, the $60 is waived completely. If it's something else (like a dirty fan coil that just needs cleaning), the $60 covers the visit and we'll quote the actual fix separately.
How long does a gas top-up take?
About 30–45 minutes for a typical residential top-up once we've confirmed gas is the issue. We connect manifold gauges to your system, weigh in the correct amount of refrigerant for your gas type and system size, then run the unit and verify cooling has been restored before leaving.
Will my aircon need topping up again next year?
Maybe, maybe not. If your system has a small slow leak (common in 10+ year old units), a top-up can last 12–24 months. If it has a significant leak, you'll be back in months. The honest answer: a top-up is a band-aid, a pressure test finds the actual leak. We'll tell you which makes more sense for your situation.
Do you do gas top-ups for VRV/VRF systems?
Yes, but pricing is completely different from residential multi-split systems. VRV/VRF systems often require multiple full tanks of refrigerant. WhatsApp us with your system details and we'll provide a custom quote.
Which areas in Singapore do you cover?
All of Singapore — HDB, condo, landed and commercial. From Tampines and Bedok to Woodlands and Jurong. Same-day appointments available in most areas.
