Aircon Gas Low? The Real Signs, Honest Checks and 2026 Top-Up Costs (Singapore)

https://thl-aircon.com.sg/all-you-need-to-know-about-aircon-gas-top-up/

Your aircon is blowing air but the room never gets properly cold. You suspect the gas is low. Before you let anyone top it up, read this. Low refrigerant is real, but it is also the single most over-sold “fix” in the Singapore aircon trade, because gas does not get used up. If your unit is low, it is leaking, and topping up without finding the leak just means paying again in a few months.

At Lion City Aircon we have done over 22,000 jobs since 2016. This guide covers the real signs of low gas, how to check without opening the unit, and why we always diagnose before we top up.

Aircon Gas Does Not Run Out. It Leaks Out.

This is the most important thing to understand. Refrigerant is sealed in a closed loop. In a healthy system it lasts the entire life of the unit and never needs topping up. So if your aircon is genuinely low on gas, there is a leak somewhere, at a pipe joint, a flare connection, the coil, or a valve.

Any company that tops you up every year without ever looking for the leak is selling you a subscription, not a repair. A proper top-up should come after a pressure test that finds and fixes the leak.

The Real Signs Your Aircon Gas Is Low

  • Weak cooling that has slowly got worse. The clearest sign. The unit runs but struggles to hit the set temperature, especially in the afternoon heat.
  • Ice or frost on the copper pipes or the indoor coil. Low refrigerant pressure drops the coil below freezing. People assume ice means “very cold and working”, but it usually means the opposite.
  • The aircon runs constantly and never cycles off. It cannot reach the target temperature, so it never gets a rest. You will often notice it on the electricity bill first.
  • A hissing or bubbling sound. Sometimes audible at a leak point, though a hiss has other causes too.
  • Longer and longer time to cool a room that used to chill in minutes.

How to Check Without Opening the Unit

You do not need tools or to touch any refrigerant to gather useful clues:

  • Feel the air at the indoor vent. On a healthy unit set to 23 degrees, the air should feel distinctly cold, not just “moving”. Weak, barely-cool air points to a refrigerant or airflow problem.
  • Look at the copper pipes at the outdoor unit or where they enter the wall. Frost or ice on the pipes is a red flag.
  • Rule out the cheap cause first. A dirty filter or coil produces nearly identical weak cooling. Clean or replace the filter, run the unit for a day, and see if it improves. If a clean unit still cannot cool, then the refrigerant side is worth checking. See our guide on why your aircon is not cold enough.
  • Check whether one unit or all units are affected. All units weak at once points to something shared. A single weak unit points to that unit’s coil, filter, or refrigerant.

What you should not do is buy a DIY top-up can. Overcharging is as damaging as undercharging, the gas type must match your system (R22, R32 or R410A), and refrigerant handling is regulated in Singapore.

What a Proper Gas Service Looks Like

Here is how we handle it at Lion City Aircon, and what you should expect from anyone:

  1. Diagnose first. We start with a troubleshooting visit to confirm the gas is actually low and find out why. Often the real problem turns out to be a dirty coil, not low gas at all.
  2. Pressure test if a leak is suspected. This locates the leak instead of guessing.
  3. Fix the leak, then recharge to specification. Top up to the manufacturer’s exact weight, not by feel.

Gas Top-Up Cost in Singapore

Lion City Aircon pricing, same across HDB, condo and landed, all figures exclude GST:

  • Troubleshooting visit: $60, waived completely if you proceed with the top-up.
  • Multi-split gas top-up (typical): $80 to $200 depending on system size and how much it needs, covering R22, R32 and R410A.
  • Pressure test to find a leak: from $190 for a System 1, plus $60 per additional system.

It is cheaper for a company to bill you for a $150 top-up every year than to spend the time finding a leak once. We would rather find the leak. See our full aircon gas top-up service page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does aircon gas need topping up?

Never, in a healthy system. Refrigerant is sealed and does not deplete. If yours needs regular topping up, you have a leak that should be found and fixed.

Can I top up the gas myself with a can from the shop?

No. The gas type must match your system, overcharging causes as much damage as undercharging, and refrigerant work is regulated in Singapore. A wrong charge can damage the compressor.

How do I know if it is low gas or just a dirty filter?

You often cannot tell from symptoms alone. Clean the filter and coil first, run the unit for a day. If a clean unit still cools weakly and frosts up, then the refrigerant side is worth a proper check.

How long does a gas top-up last?

If the leak was found and fixed, indefinitely. If someone just topped it up without fixing a leak, expect the same problem to return within months.

Is ice on the pipes a sign of low gas?

Often, yes. Low pressure drops the coil below freezing. It can also be a dirty filter or a refrigerant restriction, so it needs checking rather than assuming.

Get an Honest Diagnosis Before You Top Up

If your aircon is cooling weakly or frosting up, do not just pay for gas. We diagnose first, find out whether it is actually low refrigerant or something cheaper, and if there is a leak we find it. No scare tactics, no annual top-up trap.
