You hear a click. The aircon goes silent. Your fridge lights flicker. You walk to the DB box and find the aircon breaker has tripped. You flick it back on, the aircon runs for 10 minutes, and then it trips again.
This is one of the most stressful aircon faults we deal with at Lion City Aircon. Across our 6 service teams handling 30+ jobs daily across Singapore, “aircon keeps tripping the breaker” comes up almost every day, and it’s rarely just an annoyance. A repeatedly tripping breaker is your electrical system telling you something is genuinely wrong, and ignoring it can lead to anything from a damaged compressor to (in the worst cases) an electrical fire.
The good news is that most tripping issues are diagnosable in one visit and fixable on the spot. The not so good news is that pretending the breaker is broken and replacing it without fixing the root cause is a classic Singapore aircon scam. We’ve seen homeowners pay $300 for a “new breaker” when the actual fault was a $40 capacitor.
This guide covers every reason an aircon trips the circuit breaker in Singapore, ranked by how often we actually see them in HDB flats, condos, and landed homes. Plus how to tell which cause you’re dealing with and what to do about it.
First, Stop Resetting the Breaker. Here’s Why.
The single most common mistake we see homeowners make is to reset the tripped breaker 5, 10, 15 times in a row, hoping it’ll “hold this time.” It won’t, and every reset adds wear to the breaker contacts and risks damage to the compressor.
A circuit breaker isn’t being annoying. It’s doing its job. Something in the system is drawing too much current, and the breaker is cutting power to prevent fire or component damage. Each reset:
- Forces a damaged compressor to keep trying to start (compressor damage equals expensive)
- Wears down the breaker contacts (eventually it fails to trip when it should, and that’s when fires happen)
- Doesn’t fix the underlying problem
What to do instead: Leave the breaker off. Switch off the aircon at the wall. WhatsApp us a photo of your DB box and we’ll diagnose remotely if possible. +65 8818 5781.
The 7 Reasons Your Aircon Keeps Tripping the Breaker (Ranked by How Often We See Them)
1. Dirty Air Filters or Coils (the #1 cause)
When your filters or evaporator coil are clogged with dust, airflow drops. The compressor has to work harder to compensate, drawing more current than the circuit was sized for. Eventually the current spike trips the breaker.
This is the most common cause we see in Singapore homes that have skipped 6+ months of servicing. The fix is also the cheapest.
How to spot it: The aircon worked fine 6+ months ago but has gradually gotten less cold, the trips started recently, and the room is harder to cool than it used to be.
The fix: Clean the filters yourself (free). If that doesn’t solve it, the coil needs a proper cleaning. Either standard aircon servicing or a chemical wash depending on how bad the buildup is.
2. Faulty Capacitor
The capacitor stores the burst of electricity needed to start the compressor and fan motors. When it fails (and they fail often in Singapore’s humid heat), the motors try to start but draw a much higher current than normal. This instantly trips the breaker.
Capacitors are the most underestimated component in aircons. They’re cheap, they’re small, but when they go, the whole system stops.
How to spot it: The aircon trips the breaker the moment you switch it on, or within 30 seconds. Sometimes you hear a buzzing or humming sound from the outdoor unit just before the trip. Common in units 4 to 8 years old.
The fix: Capacitor replacement. Parts cost under $80. Whole repair usually under $130 including labour. We carry spares on the truck for most common brands (Daikin, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Hitachi, York).
3. Faulty Compressor
The compressor is the most power hungry component in the system. As it ages, internal wear can cause it to draw progressively more current to do the same work. Eventually it draws enough to trip the breaker every time it tries to start.
This is more common in older aircons (8+ years) and units that have been run hard without regular servicing.
How to spot it: Aircon runs for a while then trips (compressor under load). Outdoor unit may make grinding, knocking, or labouring sounds before trips. Trips usually happen when cooling demand is high (hottest afternoons).
The fix: Compressor diagnosis is required. If the windings have shorted, replacement is needed. Costs typically run $750 to $1,500 depending on brand and tonnage. On older units, replacement often makes more financial sense than repair. See our complete compressor guide for the full breakdown.
4. Wrong Breaker Size for Your Aircon (Installation Error)
Every aircon has a maximum amperage draw, and the breaker on its circuit needs to match. A System 2 split aircon typically needs a 20 to 25A breaker. A System 3 may need 30A. If your aircon was installed on an undersized breaker (which we see surprisingly often in older HDB flats), it’ll trip even when nothing is wrong with the unit itself.
How to spot it: A new aircon installation that started tripping within weeks. Or an existing unit started tripping after you moved into the flat (previous owner may have changed something). The breaker label shows a lower amperage than the aircon nameplate requires.
The fix: This is the only situation where the breaker actually needs to be replaced, and it needs a licensed electrician. We work with licensed EMA registered electricians and can coordinate the work. Important: we never “upgrade” a breaker without verifying the wiring can handle the increased load. That’s the part where most cowboys cut corners and create fire risks.
5. Short Circuit in the Wiring
A genuine electrical fault. Wire insulation has worn through, water has reached a junction box, or a connection has loosened, causing current to bypass its intended path. This is the most serious cause and the only one where we tell you to switch off the entire DB at the mains immediately.
How to spot it: Breaker trips the instant you switch the aircon on, no warning sounds, possible burning smell or visible scorching near the aircon or DB box, sometimes other circuits trip too.
The fix: A licensed electrician must trace the short and repair the affected wiring. This isn’t DIY territory and we don’t touch live electrical work outside the aircon unit itself. We’ll coordinate with a licensed electrician where needed.
6. Overloaded Circuit (Too Many Appliances)
Common in older HDB flats and condos with original wiring: the aircon shares a circuit with other heavy appliances (water heater, induction hob, washing machine), and when all are running together, total current exceeds what the breaker can handle.
How to spot it: Tripping only happens at specific times (e.g., when someone showers and the aircon is on, or when the kitchen is in use). The aircon by itself runs fine.
The fix: Re balance the load. Don’t run everything simultaneously. Long term, an electrician can add a dedicated aircon circuit, which is the right solution for HDB renovations. If you’re renovating anyway, this is the time to do it.
7. Refrigerant Issues Causing the Compressor to Overheat
When refrigerant is too low (gas leak) or too high (over charged in a previous service), the compressor runs at the wrong pressure, overheats, and the protection circuit cuts power. Sometimes this shows up as a breaker trip.
How to spot it: Cooling has been weak for weeks, trips happen after the aircon has been running for 30 to 60 minutes (not at startup), the outdoor unit may feel unusually hot to the touch.
The fix: Pressure test the system, find any leaks, repair, and recharge to the correct refrigerant level. See our aircon gas top-up guide for more details. Just adding gas without finding the leak doesn’t solve the problem.
What to Do Right Now if Your Aircon Keeps Tripping
Run through this in order:
- Leave the breaker off. Don’t keep resetting it. You’re not “outsmarting” the safety system, you’re risking damage.
- Switch off the aircon at the wall switch so it can’t try to restart when the breaker is reset.
- Check if other appliances were running when the trip happened. If yes, you may have an overload (cause #6) rather than an aircon fault.
- Look for any burning smell or visible scorching at the DB box or near the aircon. If yes, switch off the entire DB at the mains and call a licensed electrician. Don’t reset anything.
- Note the timing. Trips at startup equals electrical fault (capacitor, short, breaker size). Trips after running a while equals mechanical or thermal (compressor, refrigerant, dirty coils).
- WhatsApp +65 8818 5781 with a photo of your DB box and the aircon nameplate. We can usually narrow down the cause before sending a team.
How Much Does Fixing a Tripping Aircon Cost in Singapore?
Lion City Aircon pricing is the same across Singapore. HDB, condo, landed, same rate:
- Diagnostic visit + filter or coil cleaning: $35 to $50 per unit
- Chemical wash (for clogged coil): from $90 per unit
- Capacitor replacement: from $130 (parts + labour)
- Gas leak diagnosis + repair + recharge: from $180 per system
- Compressor replacement: from $750 (depends on brand and tonnage)
- Electrical work (licensed electrician): quoted on site after diagnosis
If you have an active annual maintenance contract with us, diagnostic visits are free and most basic repairs are included or heavily discounted between scheduled visits.
How to Prevent Tripping From Happening Again
Most tripping faults trace back to one of two roots:
- Skipped servicing. Dirty filters and coils force the compressor to draw more current, eventually pushing past the breaker’s threshold.
- Aged components. Capacitors and contactors wear out, especially in Singapore’s humidity. They’re cheap to replace during servicing if caught early.
Our quarterly servicing always includes:
- Filter and coil cleaning to keep current draw at spec
- Capacitor visual check (bulging, corrosion equals replace before it fails)
- Contactor inspection for wear and pitting
- Refrigerant pressure check (catches slow leaks early)
- Outdoor unit electrical connections check
Most of our tripping callbacks come from homes that hadn’t serviced in 8+ months. See our guide on how often to service your aircon in Singapore.
Frequently Asked Questions About Aircon Tripping
Can I just replace the breaker myself?
No, and we’d strongly advise against it even if you know how. Breaker replacement is licensed electrical work in Singapore. More importantly, replacing the breaker doesn’t fix the cause of the trips. It just removes the safety mechanism. We’ve seen DIY breaker replacements that turned into fires within months.
Is it safe to keep using the aircon if it only trips occasionally?
No. An “occasional” trip is the early warning. The fault is already there, it’s just intermittent. Letting it continue almost always leads to a hard failure (compressor damage, electrical fire risk) within weeks to months. Get it diagnosed now while the fix is cheap.
The breaker trips even when only the aircon is on. Is the aircon definitely the problem?
Probably, but not always. Sometimes the problem is the wiring between the DB and the aircon (not the aircon itself), or the breaker is faulty and trips at lower current than it should. A diagnostic visit confirms which part of the chain is at fault.
Why does the trip only happen on hot afternoons?
Two reasons. First, on hot days the aircon runs harder for longer, pushing already stressed components past their limit. Second, when several flats in your block are running aircons hard, line voltage can drop slightly, causing motors to draw more current to maintain output. The trip is the aircon, not the supply, but the heat is the trigger.
My new aircon trips after just a few weeks. Is this the installer’s problem?
Yes, very likely. New unit tripping is usually one of three things: undersized breaker (installation error), incorrect refrigerant charge, or a faulty component from the factory. Contact your original installer first if still under workmanship warranty. If they can’t or won’t fix it properly, we can take over.
How long does fixing a tripping aircon take?
Most diagnoses are completed in 30 to 45 minutes. Capacitor replacements add another 30 minutes. Coil cleaning or chemical wash adds 60 to 90 minutes. We carry common parts on the truck. Most repairs are completed in a single visit, no second appointment needed.
Should I replace the aircon or fix it?
Depends on age and cost. If your unit is under 8 years old and the repair is under $400, fix it. If it’s 10+ years old and needs $700+ in repairs, replacement usually makes more financial sense. Newer inverter models also use significantly less power, recouping cost over a few years. We give you honest numbers on both options before you decide. More on installation here.
Can a tripping aircon actually cause a fire?
The trip itself is the safety system working. It’s preventing a fire. The risk is when you ignore it (the underlying fault gets worse) or “fix” it incorrectly (oversized breaker bypasses the safety). A properly diagnosed and repaired aircon is not a fire risk. A repeatedly tripping aircon being constantly reset is.
