Your Daikin is showing L5 and the unit has stopped cooling. Here is what that code actually means, what tends to cause it in Singapore, and what fixing it involves, from a team that attends Daikin faults every week.
What L5 means
Daikin error code L5 signals an inverter instantaneous overcurrent on the DC output. In plain terms, the compressor drive drew a sudden surge of current and the board shut the system down to protect itself. This is a protection stop, not a random glitch, and it sits at the serious end of the Daikin fault table. We cover the full table in our Daikin error codes guide.
What usually causes L5 in Singapore
Three culprits cover most of the L5 calls we attend. A compressor that is starting to fail draws abnormal current, especially on units past their eighth year. A faulty inverter PCB can misread or misdeliver current even when the compressor is healthy. And refrigerant problems, either low gas from a leak or a system blockage, force the compressor to work outside its design range until the board trips. Singapore adds its own aggravator: outdoor units on hot, enclosed ledges with dirty condenser coils run hotter and harder, which pushes a borderline system over the line sooner.
What you can safely try
Exactly one thing: switch the unit off at the breaker, wait five minutes, and restart. If L5 was a one-off transient, it clears. If the code returns, stop resetting it. Repeated restarts against a genuine overcurrent fault is how a repairable problem becomes a dead compressor. Do not run the unit and hope.
What our technician does
An L5 visit is a proper electrical and refrigerant diagnosis: measuring the compressor current draw, checking the inverter board outputs, testing system pressures, and inspecting the condenser condition. The point is to separate the three causes, because they carry very different price tags, and replacing a compressor when the real fault was a $0 airflow problem or a PCB is the kind of mistake that gives this industry a bad name.
What it costs
Honestly: it depends on which cause it is. A blocked condenser needing proper cleaning sits at normal servicing rates. An inverter PCB replacement is a mid-range repair. A failing compressor on an older unit is a big-ticket decision, and this is where we give you the repair versus replace maths straight: on a unit past 8 to 10 years, a compressor job often costs enough that a new 5-tick system, with grants and vouchers where eligible, wins within a couple of years on electricity alone. Diagnosis rates are published on our aircon repair in Singapore page, and we quote the full repair before touching anything.
