H99 is the Panasonic code people panic about unnecessarily, and occasionally the one they ignore when they should not. Here is how to tell which situation you are in.
What H99 means
Panasonic H99 is the indoor unit freeze protection. The indoor coil got cold enough to risk icing over, and the system stepped in to prevent it. Unlike the F series faults, this is a medium severity protection code, and it very often points to a maintenance problem rather than a broken part. Full table in our Panasonic error codes guide.
What usually causes H99 in Singapore
A coil freezes when too little warm air moves across it, or when there is too little refrigerant in it. In practice that means: filters so clogged the blower cannot pull air through, a dirty evaporator coil or blower wheel doing the same thing from the inside, or low gas from a slow leak. In our jobs, the airflow causes lead by a wide margin, especially on units that have gone a year or more without proper servicing. Singapore humidity accelerates the whole cycle: damp dust cakes harder and grows mould faster.
What you can safely try
This is one of the few codes with a genuine DIY first step. Switch the unit off, open the front panel, and wash the filters if they are dirty, most are. Let any ice on the coil melt fully with the unit off, an hour or two. Then restart. If H99 stays away and cooling is strong, you just fixed it, and a proper servicing soon will keep it away. If H99 returns with clean filters, the cause is deeper: a dirty coil that needs professional cleaning, or low gas that needs a pressure test.
What our technician does
We check airflow end to end, filters, coil, blower wheel, then measure system pressures. A coil past home cleaning gets a proper wash, see our aircon chemical wash service, and if pressures are low we test for the leak rather than blind topping up.
What it costs
Often just a normal servicing or a chemical wash at our published rates. The expensive version of H99 is the one that was ignored for months while the system strained. Diagnosis rates are on our aircon repair in Singapore page.
