Here is a conversation we have at least once a week. A customer messages us on WhatsApp asking for a quote on a “Mitsubishi aircon”. We ask which one. They say “the normal one, Mitsubishi”. And then we have to explain that there are two completely different companies selling aircons under the Mitsubishi name in Singapore, they are not the same product, and the price difference is real.
So let us settle it properly. We install both brands, we have no reason to push you either way, and by the end of this post you will know exactly which one fits your home.
Wait, there are two Mitsubishis?
Yes, and they are genuinely separate companies.
Mitsubishi Electric is the one most Singaporeans mean. Their aircon range here is called Starmex. This is the brand you see in almost every HDB flat and condo, the one your neighbour has, the one contractors fit by default. Wall units carry model codes like MSY and MSXY, and the multi split outdoor units are the MXY series.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, usually shortened to MHI or just Mitsubishi Heavy, is a different corporation entirely. They build ships, turbines and aerospace parts, and they also make very solid air conditioners. Their wall units carry SRK model codes, single split outdoor units are SRC, and the multi split outdoor units are the SCM series.
Both trace their roots back to the same original Mitsubishi group over a century ago, but today they are independent companies with separate factories, separate distributors in Singapore and separate service networks. Buying one gets you nothing from the other. Even the error code systems are completely different, which matters more than you would think when something goes wrong ten years in.
The short answer
If you want the safe, boring, proven choice that every technician in Singapore knows inside out, that is Mitsubishi Electric Starmex. If you want strong cooling and solid hardware at a friendlier price and you do not care about brand recognition, Mitsubishi Heavy deserves a serious look.
Now the long answer, because the details are where people get burned.
Where Mitsubishi Electric wins
1. Parts and technicians everywhere
Starmex is the best selling aircon brand in Singapore, and that popularity is self reinforcing. Every parts supplier stocks Starmex components. Every aircon technician in the country, including all seven of our teams, has serviced hundreds of them. If your PCB or fan motor dies in year eight, the part is usually available the same week. That is not a small thing. We have seen owners of less common brands wait weeks for a part to ship in.
2. Quiet operation
The Starmex wall units are among the quietest we install, especially at low fan speeds in bedrooms. This is the single most common reason customers specifically ask for Mitsubishi Electric. If you are a light sleeper, this brand earned its reputation honestly.
3. Resale and valuation confidence
Agents and buyers in Singapore recognise Starmex. When you sell or rent out your flat, a Mitsubishi Electric system on the listing raises zero questions. It is the aircon equivalent of a Toyota.
4. Huge range of official multi split combinations
The MXY multi split lineup supports a wide spread of official fan coil combinations, so odd room mixes are easy to configure. Where Mitsubishi Heavy wins
1. Price
Like for like, MHI usually lands noticeably cheaper than Starmex. For a whole home system that difference can pay for a year or two of servicing. If the budget is tight and you still want Japanese engineering, this is the honest shortcut.
2. Cooling muscle
MHI units are known for strong airflow and fast pull down. Owners of west facing living rooms and top floor units tend to love them. The hardware itself is robust, which fits a company that builds industrial machinery for a living.
3. You are not paying for the badge
Part of what you pay for with Starmex is the name. MHI spends less on being famous in Singapore, and the price reflects that. The SRK wall units and SCM multi split outdoor units are proper Japanese designed kit without the default brand premium.
Where each one gives you something to think about
For Mitsubishi Electric, it is simply price. You pay more for the same cooling capacity, and for some homes that premium buys nothing they will actually notice.
For Mitsubishi Heavy, it is the smaller ecosystem. Fewer installers know the brand well, fewer parts sit on local shelves, and if you sell your home, some buyers will squint at the unfamiliar model stickers. None of this makes it a bad aircon. It makes it a brand you should buy from an installer who actually knows it and can support it afterwards.
Warranty and servicing
Warranty structures for both brands in Singapore are similar on paper, typically one year general and five years on the compressor, but always confirm the current terms for the exact model on your quote. Servicing costs are the same regardless of brand. Our servicing rates do not change between a Starmex and an SRK, and both brands respond well to regular maintenance.
One practical note from our workshop. Because the two companies use different diagnostic systems, a technician who only knows one brand can misread the other. Starmex units show alphanumeric fault codes, while many MHI units communicate through blink patterns on the indoor unit lights. It is one more reason to use an installer who handles both.
So which one should you buy?
Choose Mitsubishi Electric Starmex if: you want the quietest bedrooms, maximum parts availability for the next fifteen years, easy resale, or you simply want the choice you will never have to defend. This is what we fit in most HDB and condo homes, and it is what our own team members mostly run at home.
Choose Mitsubishi Heavy if: you want Japanese build quality at a sharper price, you cool large or sun facing rooms and value raw cooling power, or you are outfitting a rental unit where the badge matters less than the invoice.
