Does Panasonic nanoe X Actually Help With Haze? We Read the Footnotes

Panasonic CS-XU9BKZW wall mounted fan coil with nanoe X, installed in a Tengah BTO flat in Singapore

We put a Panasonic System 2 into a flat at Tengah Garden Avenue recently. A CU-2XU20YBZ outdoor unit with CS-XU9BKZW and CS-XU12BKZW fan coils. Ordinary job, went in clean.

Then the owner asked the question we now get every haze season: does the nanoe X in this thing actually do anything about haze?

It is a fair question and we sell these units, so we had a choice. Repeat the brochure, or read the footnotes on our own product. We read the footnotes, and the answer is more interesting than either a yes or a no.

Start here: you cannot see whether it is working

This is the part that makes the whole subject slippery, and almost nobody says it out loud.

PM2.5 means particles of 2.5 micrometres and smaller. The human eye resolves somewhere around 40 to 50 micrometres at absolute best. A human hair is about 50 to 70. Haze particles are therefore something like twenty to thirty times finer than the smallest thing a person can see.

What you see outdoors during haze is distance going milky, which is light scattering across hundreds of metres of air. Inside a three metre bedroom there is nothing visible at all, whether the air is clean or filthy.

So when a salesman tells you that you will notice the difference, understand what is being said. You cannot notice it. Neither can we. The room looks identical either way. That is exactly why air purification claims survive unchallenged, and it is why the only things worth weighing are the actual tests and their limits.

What nanoe X is, and what its haze claim really covers

nanoe X puts hydroxyl radicals, carried in microscopic water particles, into the air. Those radicals oxidise chemical compounds, breaking them down. Panasonic rates the current version as Generator Mark 3 and says it produces roughly 100 times more hydroxyl radicals than the original nanoe.

The haze claim is this: working with the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology, Panasonic reported that nanoe X inhibits up to 95 per cent of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, which are a component of PM2.5 in smoke pollution. After one hour the inhibition rates were 94 per cent for naphthalene, 95 per cent for acenaphthene and 75 per cent for fluorene.

The institute is a genuine research body and we have no reason to doubt the measurements. But two details in the small print change what the number means.

It measured chemicals stuck to surfaces, not particles in your air. The test adhered the PAHs first, then measured how much broke down. That is surface chemistry. It is not the removal of airborne particles from a room you are breathing in.

The test volume was 45 litres. A box measuring 350 by 350 by 400 millimetres, which is about a shoebox. Panasonic does not claim this scales to a bedroom, and it would be wrong to assume it does. The brochure simply prints the figure under a heading about haze and lets the reader draw the line.

So nanoe X breaking down hydrocarbons inside a sealed shoebox is real science. It is not evidence that your aircon clears haze from your living room.

The stronger number belongs to a different technology

Worth knowing, because the two get mixed up constantly.

The much-quoted 99 per cent dust removal figure, down to PM2.5, is nanoe-G, not nanoe X. nanoe-G works differently: it releases negative ions that charge fine particles so they are drawn back out of the air towards the filter and surrounding surfaces.

That test is more relevant to haze than the PAH one, because it is about airborne particles and it was run in a 23 cubic metre chamber, roughly a small bedroom rather than a box. Cigarette smoke supplied the PM2.5. Tested by the FCG Research Institute, report 25034.

Two honest caveats remain. The catalogue does not publish how long the 99 per cent took, and twenty minutes versus eight hours are very different products. And a chamber is sealed, whereas during haze your home has fine particulate leaking in continuously, so clearing a room once is not the same as holding it clear.

The reason we are telling you this is that it does not flatter us. nanoe-G is the technology with the more applicable test, and the units we sell carry nanoe X.

What we actually tell customers

If you are buying a new Panasonic anyway, nanoe X is a reasonable thing to have. It runs continuously in the background, it has credible testing behind its deodorising and pollutant inhibition claims, and on the X-Premium units the Inside Cleaning function helps keep the fan coil from turning mouldy, which genuinely matters in Singapore humidity. We would not talk you out of it.

What we will not do is sell it to you as haze protection for someone who is vulnerable.

If there is anyone in the house who is elderly, very young, pregnant or asthmatic, the thing that protects their lungs during haze is a standalone purifier with a true HEPA filter, running in the room where they sleep, with the aircon on and the windows shut to keep the place sealed and cool. That is the combination that works. No wall mounted split, nanoe or otherwise, replaces it.

The fuller version of that argument is in our guide on whether your aircon filters haze.

The part nobody mentions: haze is hard on the unit itself

While everyone worries about their lungs, the aircon is quietly taking a beating. Fine particulate loads the filter faster than ordinary household dust, and a loaded filter means weaker airflow, longer run times and a higher bill. The outdoor condenser coil gets the same treatment, which makes the compressor work harder in already hot weather.

After a serious haze stretch, cleaning the filters is the minimum. If cooling has dropped off noticeably, the coil is what to look at, and that is a general servicing job rather than anything exotic.

Buying advice, plainly

Ask which technology is actually in the model you are being quoted, because nanoe and nanoe X and nanoe-G are not the same thing and the brochures are not always clear. Ask which generator version. Mark 3 is current.

We confirm the exact model and what is built into it before anything is ordered, and we will tell you if the unit you are looking at does not have what you think it has. If you want one, we handle the installation.

WhatsApp us at +65 8818 5781 for a straight answer on a specific model. We will tell you what the catalogue says and what the footnote says, which are not always the same thing.
